Address to Youth: Between Fascination and Awareness

By Dr. Nouna Sammari

O youth of the Ummah…

You are not a passing generation in a passing time. You stand at a defining moment—either to become an امتداد of deep awareness, or merely an echo of an imported image.

Let me begin with honesty: Yes, we are fascinated by the West. We admire its progress, its order, its knowledge, its power—and this, in itself, is not wrong. A sound mind appreciates excellence wherever it exists.

But… the problem does not begin with admiration; it begins at the moment this admiration turns into imbalance—into a subtle feeling that we are lesser, and that the only path to advancement is to become a copy of others.

Here lies the danger.

O youth, There is a vast difference between one who learns… and one who dissolves. Between one who borrows with awareness… and one who imitates without thought. Between one who sees in others a human experience to be studied—filtered, examined, and from which the best is chosen—and one who consumes it entirely, even when it breeds a chronic illness in the mind and paralyzes reason and creativity… or elevates it into something blindly revered.

The West did not rise by abandoning itself, but by understanding itself, developing it, and defending it. So how can we assume that the path to progress lies in abandoning our own identity?

Is progress to dress like them? To speak like them? To think only within the frameworks they have drawn for us?
Or is true progress to possess the tools of the age while remaining firmly rooted—in our humanity, our authenticity, and our own thinking?

O youth, The most dangerous thing that can happen to a person is not to fall behind… but to lose their definition of self.

To stand before a mirror and see not their own features, but the reflection of another.

Take from the world its knowledge, its precision, its respect for time, its appreciation for work. Take what is human and universal. But do not take what erases you.

Do not be enemies of the West… nor followers of it. Be conscious. Let your minds have their rightful share of life, so that humanity may endure on this earth. Our hearts have been shaken with pain as we witness the melting away of the human being and the decline of his dignity—until we see man devouring his fellow man senselessly, without even hunger.

Always remember: Nations that respect themselves are the ones whose existence is respected. And a young person who knows who they are is not easily deceived by what merely appears better.

You do not need to become a copy of anyone— but to become the version you were meant to be.

In the end… the issue is not to look at the West with admiration, but to look at ourselves with confidence while doing so.
